I am a political journalist with a 27 year career in nationwide newspapers and in the second largest TV station in Mexico, as a columnist and interviewer, respectively. Doing what I do best in favour of Persons With Disabilities (PWD) is my passion. So, for the last 13 years, I also research, communicate and connect to promote a more inclusive society. In January 2007 I created a blog about disability that lasted 8.5 years. From August 2008 to January 2013 I coordinated the biweekly page “PCD. Personas con Discapacidad” in El Universal, a national newspaper, where I presented inspiring stories about persons with disability in Mexico and testimonies of leaders who have a disability or a family member with it. It was the first effort ever in a Mexican newspaper with inclusive language and a human rights code. In May 2019, I cofounded Yo También, the first accessible media outlet in Mexico specialized in creating and promoting content around disability and inclusion.

In 2010 I created my own NGO, Comunicación para la inclusión, from where I promote a greater inclusion of PWD.
1. Relying on the expertise of specialized lawyers, I successfully lobbied the incorporation of PWD’s rights into three federal laws that are key to their social inclusion through greater access to information, education and connectivity: Telecom and Broadcasting, Transparency and Access to Public Information, and Childhood and Youth Protection. (2013-2014)
2. As a citizen candidate, I was elected as a member of Mexico’s City Constitutional Assembly where I proposed and persuaded the Assembly to include the rights of PWD in the city’s first Constitution and contributed to the creation of the city’s Human Rights Integral System. (2016-2017)
3. I worked along with government agencies and NOGs to request changes to the Mexican Constitution so an inclusive education is guaranteed. (2019-2020)

Social media's been key in my efforts to visibilize PWD and advocate for their rights. Here are some examples: 1) #AccesoDiscapacidad: Promoted the incorporation of the rights of PWD into three federal laws: Telecom, Transparency and Childhood and Youth Protection. 2) #ReconstrucciónIncluyente: After the earthquake that shook my country in 2017, together with two other DPOs (Libre Acceso A.C. and Coamex), I demanded an accessible and universally designed reconstruction of the cities affected. If the earthquake was inclusive, reconstruction should be too. As a result of this effort, I was appointed deputy commissioner for the Reconstruction of Mexico City. 3) #ConocesAAlguienConDiscapacidad was a social campaign with which civil society stood against the possible disappearance of CONADIS, the agency dedicated to establishing public policy for PwD and promoting their social inclusion. 4) #CONADISMxSinTitular was used to require the appointment of a person to lead that agency.

In May 2019, together with Bárbara Anderson, a business journalist and mother to Lucca who has cerebral palsy, I launched Yo También, where our motto is that any news piece can be about disability. In 16 months, this first of its kind project has become an essential information source for the disability community in Mexico and a key platform for activism on their behalf. We've positioned it as a reliable source of information and guidance for PWD and their families, specially in the face of the COVID-19 outbreak, by generating content in digital inclusive formats that is accessible for everyone (microsite, videos, manuals, infographics). During May and June we produced a daily video summarizing the government’s announcements on COVID-19 and other relevant updates with an emphasis on disability, and seven digital and downloadable manuals addressed to people with different disabilities on how to take care of themselves during the pandemic, better know their rights and how to claim them

In August 2006, my son Alan was born with Down syndrome and with him, a lifetime commitment to advocating in favour of PWD. Six months after I started a blog named 'Mundo D' in El Universal’s website, a national media outlet, in which I weekly presented a disability related topic and promoted online conversations around it. Back then it wasn’t common to find news pieces regarding disability in Mexico’s mainstream media so the blog quickly generated conversation and engagement. It even was subject of a chapter in the book ‘Online Activism in Latin America', published by Routledge in 2018, for having “created an innovative, citizen-centered platform for information, a forum for dialogue, and a site for advocacy directed to bringing a marginalized group [PWD] into the national consciousness and onto the national agenda for change”, according to Beth Jörgensen, who interviewed me when writing the chapter. The blog was active for 8.5 years.

Participated with voice and vote, and advised, on the public policies, programs and projects that the Council designed. Since 2016 voted as a Permanent Distinguished Guest with voice. I promoted the creation and publication of two books: "Written without Discrimination", which is a manual for writing without discrimination, and a manual for programming and designing accessible websites.

In late 2017, I was honored with the Distinguished Humphrey Leadership Award to take a leadership program at Harvard University, followed by job shadowing internships at Mobility International USA in Eugene, Oregon and at DREDF in Berkeley, California.
